In 1823 John Oxley was the first European to see the Tweed Valley, and he wrote of it: “A deep rich valley clothed with magnificent trees, the beautiful uniformity of which was only interrupted by the turns and windings of the river, which here and there appeared like small lakes. The background was Mt. Warning. The view was altogether beautiful beyond description. The scenery here exceeded anything I have previously seen in Australia.”Timber cutters originally moved to the Tweed Valley in 1844. After the timber had been cleared, farmers moved in with bananas, cane and dairy farming dominating the area, while a fishing industry developed. The first school opened in 1871.

Foundation Day

Australian Foundation Day

Foundation Day is a designated date on which celebrations mark the founding of a nation, state or a creation of a military unit. This day is for countries that came into existence without the necessity of gaining Independence. Older countries that use some other event of special significance as their national day. This signals the use of a ”class” of National Days, that are equally important in the foundation of the nation, and a ”class” of less important official public holidays. This holiday can be symbolized by the date of becoming republic or a significant date for a patron saint or a ruler (birthday, accession, removal, etc.) as the starting point of the nation’s history.
Australian Foundation Day also called Western Australia Day, it is a public holiday in Western Australia, celebrated on the first Monday in June each year to commemorate the founding of the Swan River Colony in 1829. Because of the celebration of Foundation Day, WA does not celebrate the Queen’s Birthday Holiday in June, as do the other Australian states; it is held in September or October instead. The Foundation Day holiday in June has officially been renamed WA Day, under new laws which recognise Aboriginal people as the original inhabitants of the land.Premier Colin Barnett said the name change, which had support from both sides of government, was more inclusive of all Western Australians and a better way to celebrate the state’s achievements.
Foundation Day marked the day on June 1, 1829, when the first English settlers reached WA and established the Swan River Colony. The public holiday is celebrated on the first Monday in June.Mr Barnett said while the laws may not appear significant in the everyday lives of West Australians, it was an important day in history.”For the first time in legislation, Aboriginal people are recognised as the original inhabitants and traditional custodians of Western Australia so it’s an important day in terms of steps towards reconciliation,” Mr Barnett said.”Foundation Day and the original settlement by the British will always be remembered as part of this celebration, but this now is a day for the State to celebrate its achievements, and look forward with confidence to the future, and is inclusive of all people” he said.
He said many West Australians were unaware about the significance of the public holiday in June.”I think if you ask people what Foundation Day was all about many would probably struggle to explain it. Everyone will understand Western Australia Day is about celebrating our state,” he said.He said celebrations surrounding the long weekend would also be ramped up to coincide with the name change, with increased funding to the Celebrate WA committee.

The poem “In Flanders Fields”

In Flanders field the poppies blow

Between the crosses, row on row,

That mark our place; and in the sky

The larks, still bravely singing, fly

Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago

We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,

Loved and were loved, and now we lie

In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:

To you from failing hands we throw

The torch; be yours to hold it high.

If ye break with us who die

We shall not sleep, though poppies grow

In Flanders fields.
